Safety
Our Safety Plan: Ever-evolving, endlessly robust
Every year at Oxalis, we develop a highly detailed, bespoke Safety Plan finely tuned to the macro and micro environments we operate in. Within it are the specific actions and investments needed to ensure that we are proactive in our bid to continuously evolve and improve our safety performance in whatever ways we can.
From significant investments in driver training that both educates and inspires, to the intricate details of our equipment, the Oxalis Logistics Safety Plan touches every aspect of colleague safety.
Training is integral to any Safety Plan and each annual itineration of ours includes the targeted, periodic training needed to meet that year’s safety improvement targets.
In 2024, we invested £100,000 in our Driver Trainer Residential Training Camp – two 4-day courses covering in-depth training on everything from manual handling training delivered by an Olympic weight lifting champion, to an inspirational talk on the importance of setting high standards by former British Lions Rugby captain Jamie Peacock. Away from residential courses, our drivers are reminded of our training protocols with professionally produced materials, whether that’s static posters, training videos or face-to-face briefing sessions.
Regular Work Safe Observations are a non-negotiable part of our Safety Plan each year without fail. Our management team get out in the business and observe every one of our 1,500+ drivers on a regular basis. These observations are a vital part of equipment trials, process reviews and a great soundboard for any safety sprint schemes we intend to kickstart, which act as incentive schemes to help improve safety.
Delivering world-class safety relies on having the access to the best equipment. Through listening to our drivers feedback we regularly make both iterative and transformational adjustments to hardware with even the smallest of changes positively contributing to improved safety and service performance.
Recent driver-led equipment changes have included rounding off the corners of Hazchem boards to ensure they aren’t a hazard and moving hinges on toolboxes to make them more accessible and more likely to self-close if left open. It has also involved developing Product Grade Indicators with pneumatics so that our drivers don’t need to leave the side of the trailer when delivering and adding transparent windows to fire extinguisher boxes so that they can be inspected twice a day without being removed and potentially damaged.
Our Safety Plan is also about diligently preparing for when things don’t go to plan by supporting and heavily resourcing our 24/7 incident response team who aim to attend any safety incident within 2 hours.
Our in-house incident controllers are trained and equipped to attend the scene of an incident and manage it, drawing on our specialist partners when needed, be it to recover vehicles, clear up spills or uplift products. Whilst we invest heavily in ensuring incidents don’t happen, if they do, we undertake detailed investigations so as to identify root and contributory causes, enabling us to implement preventative measures and reduce the probability of recurrence.
